Mighty God or Magician

"The Most Reluctant Convert" is a movie about the journey of C.S. Lewis, the author of the Chronicles of Narnia, from atheism to the Christian faith. During his time as an atheist, Lewis had an incorrect understanding of who God was. As a child, he prayed for his mother's healing. Not knowing who God was, Lewis didn't want a relationship with him. "Lewis did not view God as Savior or even as Judge but merely as a sort of Magician who – if asked properly – would grant a request. After a proper request, the young Lewis expected this genie-like Magician to go back into his bottle until needed again."* I do not believe that Lewis held the monopoly of this view of God. Many see God in the same way.
In truth, God, the Creator of mankind, desires to be in a close relationship with us, his creation. He has a plan for each person's life. What about you? When you pray, do you want God to give you what you ask for and then go away? Or do you yearn to know the God you are appealing to?
